Much is fermenting at I Due Aironi: not only the wine in the tanks, but also, above all, the company itself, which is undergoing big changes. I was invited by Luca, who has now taken the burden to make this old winery shine with new light.
I DUE AIRONI Società Agricola s.s., founded in 1993 on abandoned lands, was gradually completed with the achievement of over 11 hectares of specialized vineyards in Castello di Serravalle (Valsamoggia - Bologna): the heart of the DOC and DOCG wines of the Colli Bolognesi.
In 2006 it achieved the completion of vineyards and winemaking plants establishing itself with a production of over 100,000 bottles/year. Since 2015, a slow decline has begun, caused by the age and health conditions of the owner, which culminated in the complete abandonment of the crops and liquidation of the equipment in 2020.
With the new management of Leonardo Veronesi in 2022 it has regained new life and vitality, renovated plants and crops as well as the entire corporate and production image, once again set on quality and excellence. The organic production of grapes has been certified in 2023.
But this is only the beginning, other news will come with the next harvest. First of all, the new wines will be certified organic and, to reaffirm their "Bolognesity", their names will be changed to the Bolognese dialect analogous, while a Pignoletto Traditional Method sparkling wine will be presented.
The production is now around fifty-thousand bottles/year, obtained from four grape varieties: a local one, Grechetto gentile (Pignoletto) and three international ones, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
Now, works are in progress at the facility. The new management wants to open the winery to hospitality and make it more efficient.
I will be here again in one year, I am curious to see what I will find new. Even for what concerns wines, of course.
During the visit, I was friendly welcomed, with excellent platters of salumi and, obviously, with a lot of bottles, that I had the chance to taste.
Rigogolo Pignoletto frizzante DOC: 100% pignoletto grapes. In the sparkling version, Pignoletto reaches its maximum typicality, accentuating the bitterish aftertaste that distinguishes it. It is obtained in natural monofermentation of only flower must directly in an autoclave. Although still little known by the general public, it does not fear comparison, proposing itself as an excellent aperitif, with appetizers, pretzels or "snacks", as a perfect companion to first courses, or with fish and fries.
Cardellino Pignoletto superiore DOCG: 100% pignoletto grapes, vinified in white and in purity at low temperature. Pale lemon green, with a delicate and characteristic bouquet, dry taste with a typical bitterish aftertaste. In the still version it is particularly suitable with first courses, fish, fresh cheeses and eggs.
Pettirosso Cabernet Sauvignon Colli Bolognesi DOC: The controlled denomination of origin "Colli Bolognesi" and the reference to the "Serravalle" area ensure the origin and quality of the wine produced in this restricted area. It is an important "red", aged for a long time in concrete barrels, with a strong personality and tannins, particularly suitable for boiled meats, roasts, game and braised meats of which it mitigates any hint of fat.
The wine estate will be open soon to visitors, for more info:
